Why we started Open World
The Open World Team
A short answer to three questions: who we are, what we are building, and the things we will never do.
Who we are
A group of players and server software developers who met after the shutdown announcement. Nobody is paid, everyone ships code or docs, and the project runs on the same open rules as the software.
What we are building
Free, open-source software to host your own New World server, from a solo world on a desktop to a server for a large group of players.
- A launcher that sets up and updates a world.
- A server host that reads your own copy of the game.
- A vetted list of community servers, checked by volunteers.
The things we will never do
- Host servers ourselves.
- Take donations or monetize anything.
- Redistribute game files.
Not a private server. We never host servers.
The dev blog records how the work is going. Start with our position on the official sunset and work forward.
